Nadine Menendez Accused of Role in Corruption Case Involving Senator Husband
Allegations of Bribery and Fraud
Prosecutors in Washington allege that Nadine Menendez, the wife of Democratic New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, was involved in a bribery scheme involving her husband.
Prosecutors claim that Hana Al-khalil, a Lebanese political donor, paid Nadine Menendez three checks of $10,000 and set up a sham job at IS EG Halal, a halal certification company owned by Al-khalil. They allege that these payments were made in exchange for Senator Menendez's support of Al-khalif's business interests.
Previous Corruption Indictment
Senator Robert Menendez previously survived a corruption indictment in 2015, which involved allegations of bribery and obstruction of justice. However, the charges against him were ultimately dismissed due to a hung jury.
International Scheme
The indictment against Nadine Menendez and her husband alleges that they were part of a wider-ranging international corruption scheme. Prosecutors claim that the couple used their positions to benefit their own business interests and those of Al-khalil.
