Max Verstappen took pole position in a wet qualifying session at the Canadian Grand Prix, with Alpine's Fernando Alonso a surprise second.

The Red Bull driver was quickest in all three qualifying segments, and will start Sunday's race ahead of Alonso and his Alpine team-mate Esteban Ocon.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will start fourth, ahead of Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull and Lando Norris in the McLaren.

The session was interrupted by a red flag after Nicholas Latifi crashed his Williams at the exit of Turn 3, but the track was soon cleared and the session resumed.

The conditions were difficult throughout, with the track drying but still wet in places, but Verstappen was able to set the pace and claim his third pole position of the season.

Alonso's second place was a surprise, but the Spaniard has been in good form all weekend and will be hoping to challenge for the podium on Sunday.
