United States beats Republic of Ireland in Friendly
1-0 win in St. Louis
Alyssa Thompson gets the start for the USWNT
The United States beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0 on Tuesday at CityPark in St Louis with 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson getting the start.
The USWNT controlled the game from the start, but it wasn't until the 55th minute that they were able to break through. Thompson played a ball to Mallory Pugh on the left wing, and Pugh sent a cross into the box that was headed home by Catarina Macario.
The United States continued to press for a second goal, but the Irish defense held strong. The USWNT did have a chance to add to their lead in the 80th minute when Thompson was taken down in the box, but Alex Morgan's penalty kick was saved by Irish goalkeeper Marie Hourihan.
The win was the USWNT's fourth in a row and their sixth shutout in their last seven games. The USWNT will now head to Europe for a pair of friendlies against England and Spain.
