Understanding Vendor Class Identifiers

WEB MSFT 5 0 is a VCI used by Windows computers, while WEB MSFT 50 is used by some Android devices. These VCIs allow routers and other network devices to identify and handle devices differently based on their capabilities.

Windows-Based Devices

In the past, Windows-based devices typically used the VCI WEB MSFT 50. However, some newer Windows devices now use the VCI WEB MSFT 50. This change reflects the introduction of new features and capabilities in these devices.

Android Devices

Android devices typically use the VCI WEB MSFT 5 0. This allows them to connect to networks and obtain necessary configuration settings.

Encapsulated Vendor-Specific Options

In addition to the VCI, devices may also include encapsulated vendor-specific options (VSOs) in their DHCP requests. VSOs provide additional information about the device, such as its manufacturer, model, and capabilities.

Case Study: Xbox Consoles

Microsoft Xbox consoles implement the DHCP specification and understand all encapsulated vendor-specific options defined in the specification. The VCI WEB MSFT 50 is used by Xbox consoles to identify themselves on the network.

If you are experiencing issues with connecting an Xbox console to a network, you may need to adjust your router settings to accommodate the console's VCI. However, it is not possible to force the console to use a different VCI.
